Sleepy birb

Posted in City life tagged , at 4:22 pm by chavisory

It is well-established by now that my apartment has, let’s just say, wildlife issues.

When I kept hearing scratching coming from behind my curtain while watching Grimm, I kept trying to convince myself it was just the wind scraping something against the metal window frame or curtain rod.

But it was this sleepy guy.

I gently convinced him that maybe the outer windowsill would be just as good.

Finally.  This was one of those winters I was starting to suspect would never actually end.

Early spring hike

Posted in City life, Explorations tagged , , at 12:07 am by chavisory

Our weather has been really nasty for a long time, I have had almost no break time over the course of the winter, and my apartment building has been under renovation so I’ve also been in construction noise hell.  I took advantage of a recent day off with halfway decent weather earlier this month to walk 12 miles or so.

old putnam trail 1

The Old Putnam trail in Van Cortland Park turns into the South County trail in Westchester County.  It follows the route of what was the Old Putnam Railroad from Putnam County to NYC.

That’s the end of New York City right there.

Sadly, this route is marred by traffic noise for quite a bit of it, but a few sections are really beautiful and quiet.

I made it to somewhere called Grey Oaks, NY before I was really hungry and starting to figure I should probably make it back to NYC before dark….I also forgot how hard paved trails are on the feet.

Apartment wildlife

Posted in City life tagged , , at 11:55 pm by chavisory

We had a bad leak in the apartment about a week ago, followed by days of cool, humid weather that meant the walls and ceiling didn’t dry out well at all.  Heading into the bathroom this afternoon, I looked in the mirror to see this little guy right above the doorframe behind me.

Me:  It’s so cute.
Emily #2:  I could think of some different adjectives….

Horseshoe crab hunt

Posted in City life tagged , , , , , at 1:00 am by chavisory

A coworker of mine leads nature walks to remote corners of the city once a month just to make sure that we all see something other than the inside of a dark theater once in a while.  A couple of weekends ago, we went to Plum Beach in Brooklyn to see the horseshoe crabs come up on the high tide to mate and lay eggs.

It was chilly for mid-June.  Rainclouds meant we didn’t get to see the full moon rising, sadly, but there are still some beautiful views of the Rockaways and Breezy Point.

deceased horseshoe crab

Deceased horseshoe crab.  One of the things we learned is that they tend to get flipped upside down on their backs in the tide.  Because they have a segmented shell, unlike turtles, they have some ability to right themselves…but if they don’t succeed and morning comes, they get eaten by seagulls.  So if you come across one upside down, you can help it out by using your foot to nudge it back right side up.  I got to rescue 3 or 4 crabs on this night.  They’re heavier than they look.

And cuter, once you get to know them.
